It’s only natural for people to eat what tastes good to them, and companies easily take advantage of this. The processed foods that fill the shelves are made with manufactured ingredients and artificial flavors that appeal to your taste buds. While junk food is acceptable in moderation, it’s not what your body needs to stay active, healthy and strong throughout each day. The additives and high sugar cause many types of junk food to even become addictive. This starts a dangerous cycle that can damage your body, as this food cannot properly fuel your body in a healthy manner. Think of your body as a car. Whenever your car needs fuel, you add only a specific type of gasoline and a specific type of oil. Anything else, and the car will eventually break down; sooner rather then later. The exact same thing happens with our body, as it breaks down with various ailments and disease as we grow older.

Your Health is a Long Term Project

Will power is a short term solution. A long term approach requires a change in our mentality. When we look at a menu or in our refrigerator, our thought process should not be ‘what looks good’ but more towards ‘what does my body need?’ From those items that you identify as healthy fuel for you body, you can then pick what is more appealing to you. Not the other way around. While eating for pleasure is tempting, we need to understand it’s due to addictive, unhealthy ingredients. Pleasing your taste buds should come second to giving your body the nutrition it needs.

In order to keep your body going and growing strong, it needs healthy foods that promote energy and wellness and that allow the body to heal. Foods that are naturally rich in vitamins, minerals, complex carbs and proteins are an excellent way to maintain high energy levels. The key word there is ‘naturally’. The best quality fuel for your body is as close to its natural form as possible. The more processed, the less healthy it is. With junk food, you will find yourself in the short run crashing or experiencing highs and lows throughout the day, and damaging your body in the long run. By keeping a steady diet that is rich in nutrients and natural, your body gets the fuel it needs to function, to heal, and to live long.

Change How You Think About Food

Eating healthy can require you to make a conscious effort to pick foods that are better for your body. But what you’re really doing is changing your mentality and creating a new habit. If we understand that our attitude towards food is heavily influenced by the hundreds of advertisements we see and hear ever day – almost all of them pushing processed, artificial food – we can realize that our thoughts on food are not our own. Make things simple and realize the purpose of food is fuel and nutrition. Fuel your body, don’t just fill it up.

Eating a High Raw or 100% Raw diet does so many amazing things for your body. Foremost on people’s minds is usually weight loss. This is attained effortlessly as pounds drop away. The easiest way to lose excess fat is to eat lower calorie foods that are high in nutrients. When you eat foods high in nutrients and you’re able to assimilate them because you’re body is clean, then your hunger tends to decrease, as well as your cravings for “bad foods.” Wouldn’t that be nice not to have so many cravings for “bad” foods? Half the struggle to losing weight is not having cravings or always being hungry and then feeling deprived. With my lifestyle of eating Raw now, I never feel deprived because everything I eat completely satisfies me, and if I want more, I can have it, because it’s good for me. There are days that I have very little hunger and some days that I eat all day long. In either case however, I’m never gaining weight because of my Raw food choices

Losing Weight

Raw greens and vegetables have the fewest calories per bite of any food. Fruits are the second lowest, and they give satiation because they raise blood sugar and reduce appetite. One of the things I do to prevent over-eating at a meal is that I start it with an apple or some pineapple for example. I eat the apple about 20-30 minutes before I eat my meal, because the apple contains pectin and fiber, which really help fill me up so I don’t eat as much at the regular meal. Eating high-water content foods will also help you lose weight, because these foods are lower in calories. For a high-water content, Raw weight-loss diet, try the following: During the first half of the day, before you eat anything else, drink water with fresh-squeezed organic lemon juice. Shortly thereafter, drink 16 ounces of green juice or a 16-ounce fruit or green smoothie (or just whole fresh fruit). If you’re hungry later, as it gets closer to lunch, opt to have Raw soup and salad made with fresh organic ingredients. For dinner, make yourself some Raw pasta( shredded or spiraled root vegetables) and marinara or Raw falafel(collard greens) with raw cashew sauce. This is just to give you some ideas. The bottom line is that if you consume plenty of greens, especially in a liquid form, your energy will go through the roof, you will feel full and satisfied, and you lose unwanted excess weight. If you follow this eating plan, you will get all the nutrients and water you need for the day without getting too many calories. You’ll also feel full and be less likely to eat too much rich food during the day.

Gaining Weight

If your goal is to gain weight, then you can accomplish that by eating a High Raw diet and exercise program as well. If you wish to gain weight, this is best done by gaining muscle through strength and resistance workouts. You can easily get added calories needed for such training through additional blended shakes (I love adding , Hemp hearts, sweet or starchy fruits such as dates or bananas, nuts, seeds, and avocados.

Activity Level

There’s no doubt that including exercise or physical activity is going to compound the benefits of this lifestyle. You’ll find yourself with so much energy that you’ll want to exercise. You’ll want to get outside and enjoy yourself. As you transition to a higher Raw diet, you’ll find yourself wanting to move around. You’ll feel so good, you won’t want to just sit on the couch and watch TV.

One of the main benefits of exercise is that it helps oxygen flow through your body and accelerates your lymph system. You end up sweating and removing wastes through your skin. Then, your lymphatic system gets rid of toxic cellular waste products. Some experts blame cellulite on lymph accumulation. So, eat healthy and pure, get physically active to keep your lymph system flowing, and you’ll see some major changes. For my own body, my cellulite started to disappear in no time.

Vitamin D and people of colour

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is more common and often more deadly in blacks than in whites, and a new University of Rochester study shows that low vitamin D levels among black people might be a powerful factor that contributes to the racial differences in hypertension.

The University of Rochester Medical Center findings, published online April 26 in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, are consistent with growing evidence that lower vitamin D status is associated with higher blood pressure, and that people with darker skin generally produce less vitamin D.

“Our study confirms that vitamin D represents one piece of the complex puzzle of race and blood pressure,” said lead author Kevin Fiscella, M.D., professor of Family Medicine at URMC. “And, since black-white differences in blood pressure represent thousands of excess deaths due to heart disease and stroke among blacks, we believe that simple interventions such as taking vitamin D supplements might have a positive impact on racial disparities with regards to high blood pressure..

Vitamin D supplements might be a cheap and effective way to treat high blood pressure, scientists have said, after a study uncovered the best evidence yet of a link between vitamin levels and hypertension.

The benefits of vitamin D for patients with high blood pressure has been suggested before, but evidence has been sketchy. In a new study, scientists were able to determine whether low levels of vitamin D had a causal link with high blood pressure more reliably than ever before, by measuring genetic variations which affect a person’s vitamin D levels, and measuring them against blood pressure.

The research, published in The Lancet medical journal today looked at data on more than 146,000 patient records from Europe and North America.

They found that for each 10 per cent increase in vitamin D concentration, the chance of likelihood of developing high blood pressure, or hypertension, decreased by eight per cent.

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, and is normally treated with drugs such as ACE inhibitors or beta blockers, but Professor Elina Hyppönen from the University of South Australia, who led the study, said that if her findings were reinforced by further studies, vitamin D could be a game-changing alternative.

“In view of the costs and side effects associated with antihypertensive drugs, the potential to prevent or reduce blood pressure and therefore the risk of hypertension with vitamin D is very attractive,” she said. Experts said that while the study was an “important step” toward confirming vitamin D’s role in reducing blood pressure, large-scale randomised trials would be needed before it could be offered by doctors for high blood pressure patients. Vitamin D is known to be important for keeping teeth and bones healthy, and supplements are already recommended by the Department of Health for pregnant women and children and babies under five. Exposure to sunlight is a major source of vitamin D, which can also be found in foods such as oily fish and eggs.

Thembi Nkala, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the British Heart Foundation, which part funded the study, said: “This large study brings to light another potential cause of high blood pressure, which is an impressive progression in the medical field. More studies are necessary though to better understand and confirm this link between low vitamin D levels and high blood pressure.

“There are lots of simple ways to manage your blood pressure levels including cutting down on salt, keeping physically active, maintaining a healthy body weight, keeping alcohol within recommended limits and avoiding stressors where possible. “Medication will also be prescribed where necessary, otherwise keeping up with a heart healthy lifestyle is always key. Aggressive chemotherapy and invasive surgeries may beat Cancer, but brings a host of problems for patients Here is the story of a Daughter as she saw her Mother struggle against the Chemotherapy and other Modern invasion surgeries -Recounting her Mother’s Struggle with Cancer was difficult for the young woman, even several years after her death. She had endured first surgery and then chemotherapy and radiation, she said, and the cancer had gone into remission. She was thrilled, but the aggressive treatment left her with chronic, debilitating pain. Once active, she struggled to get around in her own home.

“It wasn’t the cancer that got her,” the Daughter said. “It was the Pain”. Her Mother had turned to all of her doctors, with little relief. Her surgeon had looked at her operative wounds, pronounced them well healed, then stated that they were in no way responsible for her disability. Both her Cancer Doctor and Radiation Doctor congratulated her on being in remission but then declined to prescribe pain medications since they were no longer treating him and couldn’t provide ongoing follow-up and dosing guidance. Her primary care doctor listened to her descriptions of limitations, but then prescribed only small amounts of pain meds that offered fleeting relief at best.

PAIN HAS been declared the “fifth vital sign” after temperature, heart rate, respiration and blood pressure. Sadly, according to a new study in the Journal of Oncology, a significant percentage of cancer patients continue to suffer from pains as her mother did. Researchers who surveyed more than 3000 cancer patients found that nearly two-thirds said they were in pain or receiving pain medications. Roughly a third felt they needed more painkillers to fully treat their symptoms.

A month after the patients saw their oncologists, the researchers again asked the patients about their pain. Instead of showing improvement the percentage of patients who continued to be in pain remain unchanged. Their pain in other words had not been treated. The findings re sobering echo of research from nearly physicians are just unwilling to prescribe the needed medications. Nearly a third of Cancer specialists waited until the patient was only a month’s away from death before offering maximum pain control.

These results were eye opening for the oncology community and helped fuel a firestorm of initiatives in the late 1990s and early 2000s aimed at improving how doctors address pain in general. State medical boards began to mandate that all doctors take pain management courses before renewing their licenses to practice. In a move presaging today’s checklists, pain was declared a patients fifth vital sign. Unfortunately, that new norm turned out to be not so different from the old.

While there had been a slight improvement in the number of patients whose pain was controlled, nearly a third of patients were still inadequately treated. While the study offers important follow-up data to work conducted two decades earlier, it also represents a growing interest among researchers in the symptoms of cancer, particularly for the growing number of people who are living longer than patients from even a decade ago. Thanks to advances in Cancer treatment, more than half of all cancer patients now live five years more or more past their initial cancer diagnosis.

Research by scientists at Aston University, Birmingham, and Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, suggests it contains potent anti-cancer agents that act singly or in combination against the proliferation of cancer cells. Laboratory tests showed they arrested the growth of cells within five hours of application and caused them to die within 24 hours.

The plant, which has the botanical name Fagonia cretica, is found in arid, desert regions of Pakistan, India, and some parts of Europe.

Professor Helen Griffiths and Professor Amtul R Carmichael, who headed the study, found herbal tea made from the extract of the plant destroys cancer cells but, unlike conventional chemotherapy, treatment does not damage normal breast cells, thus reducing side effects.

Reports from sufferers in Pakistan and India suggest that the plant extract does not trigger any serious side effects such as loss of hair, drop in blood count or diarrhea.

The research found the plant extract had a novel mechanism which could remedy defects in cell DNA that would normally resist tumor growth.

An impaired DNA response not only allows the cancer to flourish, it also inhibits the way chemotherapy works which reduces its effectiveness.

Professor Carmichael said a small hospital 100 miles north of in Pakistan started using the herbal tea 40 years ago to treat breast cancer patients.

“It appears to keep them in remission, although we can’t use the word cure at this stage,” she said. “However, they live for a long time without losing their hair or putting on a large amount of weight, or experiencing other toxic side effects associated with chemotherapy, so we are confident this extract has something to contribute.”

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s important to understand some basics: What is breast cancer and how does it happen? To better understand breast cancer, it helps to understand how any cancer can develop. The genes are in each cell’s nucleus, which acts as the “control room” of each cell. Normally, the cells in our bodies replace themselves through an orderly process of cell growth: healthy new cells take over as old ones die out. But over time, mutations can “turn on” certain genes and “turn off” others in a cell. That changed cell gains the ability to keep dividing without control or order, producing more cells just like it and forming a tumor.

A tumor can be benign (not dangerous to health) or malignant (has the potential to be dangerous). Benign tumors are not considered cancerous: their cells are close to normal in appearance, they grow slowly, and they do not invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumors are cancerous. Left unchecked, malignant cells eventually can spread beyond the original tumor to other parts of the body.

The term “breast cancer” refers to a malignant tumor that has developed from cells in the breast. Usually breast cancer either begins in the cells of the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands, or the ducts, the passages that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple. Less commonly, breast cancer can begin in the stromal tissues, which include the fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast.

Over time, cancer cells can invade nearby healthy breast tissue and make their way into the underarm lymph nodes, small organs that filter out foreign substances in the body. If cancer cells get into the lymph nodes, they then have a pathway into other parts of the body. The breast cancer’s stage refers to how far the cancer cells have spread beyond the original tumor Breast cancer is always caused by a genetic abnormality (a “mistake” in the genetic material). However, only 5-10% of cancers are due to an abnormality inherited from your mother or father.

About 90% of breast cancers are due to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and the “wear and tear” of life in general. What is Cancer?

The body is made up of trillions of living cells. Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person’s life, normal cells divide faster to allow the person to grow. After the person becomes an adult, most cells divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells or to repair injuries. Cancer begins when cells in a part of the body start to grow out of control. There are many kinds of cancer, but they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. Cancer cell growth is different from normal cell growth.

Instead of dying, cancer cells continue to grow and form new, abnormal cells. Cancer cells can also invade (grow into) other tissues, something that normal cells cannot do. Growing out of control and invading other tissues are what makes a cell a cancer cell. Cells become cancer cells because of damage to DNA. DNA is in every cell and directs all its actions. In a normal cell, when DNA gets damaged the cell either repairs the damage or the cell dies. In cancer cells, the damaged DNA is not repaired, but the cell doesn’t die like it should. Instead, this cell goes on making new cells that the body does not need.

These new cells will all have the same damaged DNA as the first cell does. People can inherit damaged DNA, but most DNA damage is caused by mistakes that happen while the normal cell is reproducing or by something in our environment. Sometimes the cause of the DNA damage is something obvious, like cigarette smoking. But often no clear cause is found. In most cases the cancer cells form a tumor. Some cancers, like leukemia, rarely form tumors. Instead, these cancer cells involve the blood and blood-forming organs and circulate through other tissues where they grow. Cancer cells often travel to other parts of the body, where they begin to grow and form new tumors that replace normal tissue.

This process is called metastasis. It happens when the cancer cells get into the bloodstream or lymph vessels of our body. No matter where a cancer may spread, it is always named for the place where it started. For example, breast cancer that has spread to the liver is still called breast cancer, not liver cancer. Likewise, prostate cancer that has spread to the bone is metastatic prostate cancer, not bone cancer. Different types of cancer can behave very differently. For example, lung cancer and breast cancer are very different diseases. They grow at different rates and respond to different treatments.

That is why people with cancer need treatment that is aimed at their particular kind of cancer. Not all tumors are cancerous. Tumors that aren’t cancer are called benign. Benign tumors can cause problems – they can grow very large and press on healthy organs and tissues. But they cannot grow into (invade) other tissues. Because they can’t invade, they also can’t spread to other parts of the body (metastasize). These tumors are almost never life threatening.


What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too. The remainder of this document refers only to breast cancer in women.

The female breast is made up mainly of lobules (milk-producing glands), ducts (tiny tubes that carry the milk from the lobules to the nipple), and stroma (fatty tissue and connective tissue surrounding the ducts and lobules, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels). Most breast cancers begin in the cells that line the ducts (ductal cancers). Some begin in the cells that line the lobules (lobular cancers), while a small number start in other tissues.


The lymph (lymphatic) system of the breast

The lymph system is important to understand because it is one way breast cancers can spread. This system has several parts. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped collections of immune system cells (cells that are important in fighting infections) that are connected by lymphatic vessels. Lymphatic vessels are like small veins, except that they carry a clear fluid called lymph (instead of blood) away from the breast. Lymph contains tissue fluid and waste products, as well as immune system cells. Breast cancer cells can enter lymphatic vessels and begin to grow in lymph nodes. Most lymphatic vessels in the breast connect to lymph nodes under the arm (axillary nodes). Some lymphatic vessels connect to lymph nodes inside the chest (internal mammary nodes) and those either above or below the collarbone (supraclavicular or infraclavicular nodes).

If the cancer cells have spread to lymph nodes, there is a higher chance that the cells could have also gotten into the bloodstream and spread (metastasized) to other sites in the body. The more lymph nodes that have breast cancer, the more likely it is that the cancer may be found in other organs as well. Because of this, finding cancer in one or more lymph nodes often affects the treatment plan. Still, not all women with cancer cells in their lymph nodes develop metastases, and some women can have no cancer cells in their lymph nodes and later develop metastases.


Benign breast lumps

Most breast lumps are not cancerous (benign). Still, some may need to be sampled and viewed under a microscope to prove they are not cancer.


Fibrosis and cysts

Most lumps turn out to be caused by fibrosis and/or cysts, benign changes in the breast tissue that happen in many women at some time in their lives. (This is sometimes called fibrocystic changes and used to be called fibrocystic disease.) Fibrosis is the formation of scar-like (fibrous) tissue, and cysts are fluid-filled sacs. These conditions are most often diagnosed by a doctor based on symptoms, such as breast lumps, swelling, and tenderness or pain. These symptoms tend to be worse just before a woman’s menstrual period is about to begin. Her breasts may feel lumpy and, sometimes, she may notice a clear or slightly cloudy nipple discharge.

Benign breast tumors such as fibroadenomas or intraductal papillomas are abnormal growths, but they are not cancerous and do not spread outside the breast to other organs. They are not life threatening. Still, some benign breast conditions are important because women with these conditions have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. General breast cancer terms

Here are some of the key words used to describe breast cancer.

Carcinoma – This is a term used to describe a cancer that begins in the lining layer (epithelial cells) of organs like the breast. Nearly all breast cancers are carcinomas (either ductal carcinomas or lobular carcinomas).

Adenocarcinoma An adenocarcinoma is a type of carcinoma that starts in glandular tissue (tissue that makes and secretes a substance). The ducts and lobules of the breast are glandular tissues (they make breast milk), so cancers starting in these areas are often called adenocarcinomas. Carcinoma in situ, this term is used for an early stage of cancer, when it is confined to the layer of cells where it began. In breast cancer, in situ means that the cancer cells remain confined to ducts (ductal carcinoma in situ). The cells have not grown into (invaded) deeper tissues in the breast or spread to other organs in the body.

Carcinoma in situ of the breast is sometimes referred to as non-invasive or pre-invasive breast cancer because it might develop into an invasive breast cancer if left untreated. When cancer cells are confined to the lobules it is called lobular carcinoma in situ. This is not actually a true cancer or pre-cancer, and is discussed more in the section, “What are the risk factors for breast cancer?”

Invasive (infiltrating) carcinoma – An invasive cancer is one that has already grown beyond the layer of cells where it started (as opposed to carcinoma in situ). Most breast cancers are invasive carcinomas— either invasive ductal carcinoma or invasive lobular carcinoma. Sarcoma Sarcomas are cancers that start in connective tissues such as muscle tissue, fat tissue, or blood vessels.


Types of breast cancers

There are several types of breast cancer, but some of them are quite rare. In some cases a single breast tumor can be a combination of these types or be a mixture of invasive and in situ cancer.


Ductal carcinoma in situ

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS; also known as intraductal carcinoma) is the most common type of non-invasive breast cancer. DCIS means that the cancer cells are inside the ducts but have not spread through the walls of the ducts into the surrounding breast tissue. About 1 in 5 new breast cancer cases will be DCIS. Nearly all women diagnosed at this early stage of breast cancer can be cured. A mammogram is often the best way to find DCIS early. When DCIS is diagnosed, the pathologist (a doctor specializing in diagnosing disease from tissue samples) will look for areas of dead or dying cancer cells, called tumor necrosis, within the tissue sample. If necrosis is present, the tumor is likely to be more aggressive. The term comedocarcinoma is often used to describe DCIS with large areas of necrosis. The pathologist will also note how abnormal the cells appear, especially the part of cells where DNA is found (the nucleus).


Lobular carcinoma in situ

This is not a true cancer or pre-cancer, and is discussed in the section “What are the risk factors for breast cancer?” Invasive (or infiltrating) ductal carcinoma This is the most common type of breast cancer.


Invasive (or infiltrating) ductal carcinoma (IDC)

starts in a milk duct of the breast, breaks through the wall of the duct, and grows into the fatty tissue of the breast. At this point, it may be able to spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system and bloodstream. About 8 of 10 invasive breast cancers are infiltrating ductal carcinomas. Invasive (or infiltrating) lobular carcinoma Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) starts in the milk-producing glands (lobules). Like IDC, it can spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. About 1 invasive breast cancer in 10 is an ILC. Invasive lobular carcinoma may be harder to detect by a mammogram than invasive ductal carcinoma.


Less common types of breast cancer

Inflammatory breast cancer:

This uncommon type of invasive breast cancer accounts for about 1% to 3% of all breast cancers. Usually there is no single lump or tumor. Instead, inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) makes the skin on the breast look red and feel warm. It also may give the breast skin a thick, pitted appearance that looks a lot like an orange peel. Doctors now know that these changes are not caused by inflammation or infection, but by cancer cells blocking lymph vessels in the skin. The affected breast may become larger or firmer, tender, or itchy.

In its early stages, inflammatory breast cancer is often mistaken for an infection in the breast (called mastitis) and treated as an infection with antibiotics. If the symptoms are caused by cancer, they will not improve, and a biopsy will find cancer cells. Because there is no actual lump, it might not show up on a mammogram, which can make it even harder to find it early. This type of breast cancer tends to have a higher chance of spreading and a worse outlook (prognosis) than typical invasive ductal or lobular cancer. Triple-negative breast cancer:

This term is used to describe breast cancers (usually invasive ductal carcinomas) whose cells lack estrogen receptors and progesterone receptors, and do not have an excess of the HER2 protein on their surfaces. (See the section, “How is breast cancer diagnosed?” for more detail on these receptors.) Breast cancers with these characteristics tend to occur more often in younger women and in African-American women. Triple-negative breast cancers tend to grow and spread more quickly than most other types of breast cancer. Because the tumor cells lack these certain receptors, neither hormone therapy nor drugs that target HER2 are effective treatments (but chemotherapy can still be useful if needed).


Paget disease of the nipple:

This type of breast cancer starts in the breast ducts and spreads to the skin of the nipple and then to the areola, the dark circle around the nipple. It is rare, accounting for only about 1% of all cases of breast cancer. The skin of the nipple and areola often appears crusted, scaly, and red, with areas of bleeding or oozing. The woman may notice burning or itching. Paget disease is almost always associated with either ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Treatment often requires mastectomy. If no lump can be felt in the breast tissue, and the biopsy shows DCIS but no invasive cancer, the outlook (prognosis) is excellent. If invasive cancer is present, the prognosis is not as good, and the cancer will need to be staged and treated like any other invasive cancer.


Phyllodes tumor:

This very rare breast tumor develops in the stroma (connective tissue) of the breast, in contrast to carcinomas, which develop in the ducts or lobules. Other names for these tumors include phylloides tumor and cystosarcoma phyllodes. These tumors are usually benign but on rare occasions may be malignant. Benign phyllodes tumors are treated by removing the tumor along with a margin of normal breast tissue. A malignant phyllodes tumor is treated by removing it along with a wider margin of normal tissue, or by mastectomy. Surgery is often all that is needed, but these cancers might not respond as well to the other treatments used for more common breast cancers. When a malignant phyllodes tumor has spread, it can be treated with the chemotherapy given for soft-tissue sarcomas (this is discussed in detail in our document, Soft-tissue Sarcomas.


Angiosarcoma:

This form of cancer starts in cells that line blood vessels or lymph vessels. It rarely occurs in the breasts. When it does, it usually develops as a complication of previous radiation treatments. This is an extremely rare complication of breast radiation therapy that can develop about 5 to 10 years after radiation. Angiosarcoma can also occur in the arms of women who develop lymphedema as a result of lymph node surgery or radiation therapy to treat breast cancer. (For information on lymphedema, see the section, “How is breast cancer treated?”) These cancers tend to grow and spread quickly. Treatment is generally the same as for other sarcomas. Special types of invasive breast carcinoma

There are some special types of breast cancer that are sub-types of invasive carcinoma. These are often named after features seen when they are viewed under the microscope, like the ways the cells are arranged. Some of these may have a better prognosis than standard infiltrating ductal carcinoma.

These include:

  • Adenoid cystic (or adenocystic) carcinoma
  • Low-grade adenosquamous carcinoma (this is a type of metaplastic carcinoma)
  • Medullary carcinoma
  • Mucinous (or colloid) carcinoma
  • Papillary carcinoma
  • Tubular carcinoma

Some sub-types have the same or maybe worse prognosis than standard infiltrating ductal carcinoma.

These include:

  • Metaplastic carcinoma (most types, including spindle cell and squamous)
  • Micropapillary carcinoma
  • Mixed carcinoma (has features of both invasive ductal and lobular) In general, all of these sub-types are still treated like standard infiltrating ductal carcinoma.

Ingredients

  • 4 carrots
  • 1/2C cashew nuts soaked 20 minutes, drained
  • 1/4C lime juice
  • Zest of one lime
  • 2T coconut nectar

Directions

In a high speed blender, combine all ingredients and blend until smooth. To make the soup warm, run in blender for five minutes. Adjust to taste and serve in warm bowls garnished with sprigs of coriander and drizzles of pumpkin seed oil.

Kiwi Fruit – Good for Anemia

KIWI originated in China and is also called chinese gooseberry. It was introduced to New Zealand in 1906, where it was renamed after their national bird. A late comer in the international market, until recently,

kiwi cultivationwas largely confined to China, Italy, Spain, France, New Zealand and California (USA). In India, it was introduced only a few years ago and is still categorised as an exotic fruit. However, now the country has managed to successfully grow several local varities. The fruit’s popularity is also increasing, owing to its unique art, taste and texture.

But unknown to many, kiwi also has several nutritional benefits. Unlike most other fruits, kiwi offers an unusual combination of health promoting substances. Extremely rich in vitamin C, a single Kiwi per day can help meet an adult’s daily requirement for the nutrient. Besides this, Kiwi also offers several other cardio-protective nutrients including folic acid, potassium and vitamin E and carotenoids.

Kiwi is also rich in fibers, particularly pectin, a type of solule fibre which helps in cholesterol reduction. It has significant amounts of polyphenols, cholophyll and glutathione. All this with at onlt 90 calories makes it an immensely nutrient-dense food. Kiwi consumption can help boost the body’s antioxidant status as the fruit is a power house of nutrients and substances that help neutralize free radicals, which damage the healthy cells of our body.

Kiwis have also been found to promote heart health by lowering triglyceride levels, reducing platelet aggregation and limiting tendency of blood to form clots. In a recent study done in 2004 in Oslo, Norway people who ate two or three kiwis per day for 28 days were found to have reduced their potential for clot formation by 18 per cent, as compared to those who ate no kiwis. Kiwi eaters also enjoyed a triglyceride drop of 15 per cent as compared to the control group. Kiwi also scores on its carotenoids (plant vitamin A) content and is a unique non-leafy green soure of this group of nutrients. This group of nutrients has been associated with a decreased risk for cataracts, macular degenration and the development of atherosclerotic plaques.

A recent randomised trial (2010) in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition showed enhanced iron absorption in women who ate Kiwi for four weeks, as compared to those who ate other fruits. Although, low in iron, kiwi has been found to increase iron absorption sigificantly as compared to other fruits. This could be of great significance in the Indian context, with around 70 per cent of our women being anaemic.

Being rich in fibre, kiwi is known to have work as a laxative. It has a low glycemic index, which makes it especially useful for weight watchers and diabetics. There are two popular varieties internationally – the green and the gold. The gold kiwi has a bronze colored flesh and is slightly sweeter and higher in its vitamin C and E and carotenoid content. This variety is not easily available in India. Kiwis can be included in your diet as a power snack when added to desserts and salads or pureed into smoothies, shakes and sorbets or served with grilled fish and meat.
